He's There To Protect His Claim! :)

On any dry day I can take my Canon out, focus in on the feeder, and
within moments a certain, determined male Rufus Hummingbird will touch down
 for refreshment! :)
 Sometimes he'll lift off,
show his thrilling array of color,
and touch down again for another sip
before flying up to his look-out perch at the top of the tree! :)
There he keeps a look out for other hummers daring enough to approach his water-hole! :)
When they attempt a drink he dives down and runs them off!
Only he knows the sacrifices and efforts he made to be the first to arrive to our yard to get his territory, and now that he's got it, he's there to protect his claim! :)

  1. Great photos!! I see you are mastering your camera! =) Cody and I took a bird class in school and we have really come to love bird watching (hard with kids, though... hahaha). Enjoy Rufus - he's quite a looker! (Have any others come? We find it entertaining how territorial they can be...)

  2. Yes, there are others, as I've seen him chasing off both males and females! :)
There's another male that sits on the top branch of a tree in the back yard, having claimed the flowering quince bush! The hummers fight over it's blooms every year, like they fight over the feeder! :)
How fun that you and Cody took a bird class! I've bought several books and observe a lot! We should compare notes sometime! :)

  3. That's so fun that you have them so close! We overlook a parking lot. ;( hahaha... One day we'll have trees and a place to bird watch. =) We loved to watch the humming and other birds at my grandparent's home in Utah when we were there.

I used to think bird books were weird - I just never knew how to use one... so now it's a lot of fun! and yes, we should compare notes! Next time we get together -that would be fun!
